Stress can be defined as any type of physical, emotional, or psychological strain. Stress is the body’s response to anything that requires action or attention. It can be a great motivator when focus is needed to complete a task or when our attention is required to solve a problem. It can also be detrimental to our health if we feel overwhelmed by illness, injury, career, or lifestyle changes or even everyday hassles such as being stuck in line at the grocery store or running late for a meeting. In fact, the American Institute of Stress states up to 90% of all health problems are related to stress.

Health problems such as heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, sleep disorders, and depression can all be linked to stress. Stress has detrimental effects on our spirit-mind-body interface. A Harvard study shows people  who live in high anxiety states, are four and a half times more likely to suffer sudden cardiac death (Kawachi et al. 1994).  Another study revealed individuals unable to effectively manager their stress have a 40% higher death rate than those able to control stress levels. These are alarming facts that show stress is an epidemic  running rampant in our fast-paced society.

The Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) describes stress as being a reaction to a situation – it is not about the actual situation. It is not the events or situations that cause harm but how we respond to those events that matter. Our emotions have a powerful impact on our physical, mental, and emotional well being.
