Yin Yoga

“With great respect and love, now the blessings of Yoga instruction are offered.” ~Yoga Sutra 1.1

Yoga is an ancient practice that integrates and heals the Spirit-Mind-Body interface. This beautiful practice affects all levels of our being; physical, mental, energetic, and spiritual. Existing within a holistic paradigm, yoga inspires us to take better care of ourselves and the world around us. Two inspiring motivations to have a Yin Yoga practice include the development of an attitude of attentiveness and kindness within ourselves; and to accelerate our ability to help, heal, and naturally love other Beings.

A Yin Yoga practice requires us to develop presence by settling our attention and noticing what is happening in our bodies, bringing our awareness inward. Setting an intention and willingness to feel and respect ourselves and any limitations we may have. We use the energy that is cultivated as part of this practice to create an environment of non-violence and inquiry. Through skillful means, the yin yogi is able to work with obstacles in the service of developing greater presence and self-awareness.

The three main principles in Yin postures include: finding the appropriate edge; stillness with a softening of the musculature; and lengthy postural steadiness. These main tenets help nourish our joints, increase flexibility, stimulate chi flow, provide a sense of calmness and relaxation, heighten our awareness and clarity, fully nourish the meridians, and bring our awareness inward to the subtler aspects of our experience.
